What to Put in a Bachelorette Party Gift Bag

The honest measure of a bachelorette gift bag is how much of it comes home in the suitcase. Most of it does not. Here is what consistently gets used, what gets abandoned in the hotel room, and how to think about the budget.

The five things that always get used

  1. Painkillers. Unglamorous and the most appreciated item in the bag, every single time.
  2. Electrolyte sachets. Same reason, and they take up almost no space.
  3. A hair tie and a couple of bobby pins. Someone will need both within four hours.
  4. Sunscreen, if there is any daylight involved. Travel size only.
  5. Something small and personal from the bride. A note, a photo, anything specific. This is the part people keep.

What gets left behind

Novelty straws, miniature bottles that cannot go through airport security, printed napkins, confetti, anything that needs to be carried separately, and anything that only makes sense in one location. If it cannot survive being tipped into a suitcase on the last morning, it is decoration rather than a gift.

Make the bag itself the gift

This is the single change that improves the whole exercise. A paper bag is packaging — it gets carried once and binned. A printed canvas tote does the same job on arrival and then gets used for years afterwards. It also solves the problem nobody plans for: on day two everyone needs somewhere for a water bottle, a phone charger and the shoes they gave up on.

See bachelorette party gift bags, or the personalised version with each guest's name on it — which doubles as a place card for the first dinner and ends the whose-bag-is-this problem for the rest of the weekend.

How much to spend

Work out a budget per guest first, then buy one good item at that level rather than four cheap ones. Ten well-chosen totes read as generous. Forty small novelty items read as clutter, cost more in total, and get thrown away. If the group is splitting costs, agree the per-head figure before anyone starts shopping.

How many items

Five or six. Overfilled bags get emptied into a suitcase within the hour, which means the effort you put into arranging them is invisible. Fewer, better items win.

Timing

Order printed items two to three weeks out. Buy the consumables locally at the destination if you are flying — liquids and aerosols are not worth the hand luggage argument.
